Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), the maker of Amul, is investing Rs 600 crore to set up an integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal. The facility will feature the world’s largest curd manufacturing unit, producing 10 lakh kilograms daily, and a milk processing capacity of 15 lakh litres per day.
Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), known for the iconic Amul brand, is investing Rs 600 crore to establish a state-of-the-art integrated dairy plant in Kolkata, West Bengal. This facility will house the world’s largest curd manufacturing unit, with a production capacity of 10 lakh kilograms per day. GCMMF’s Managing Director, Jayen Mehta, announced the initiative at the recently concluded Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS).
The new plant will have a milk processing capacity of 15 lakh litres per day, addressing the growing demand for curd in Kolkata and nearby regions. Located at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, the facility will be developed in two phases. The rising consumption of curd—locally known as “tok doi” (plain yoghurt) and “mishti doi” (sweet yoghurt)—has made this investment essential to meet local demand.
Amul has already established a strong presence in West Bengal, selling over 10 lakh litres of milk daily. The company has built an extensive milk procurement network across 14 districts, engaging more than 1.2 lakh women milk producers. This new plant will further strengthen Amul’s foothold in the region and support the “White Revolution 2.0” initiative by the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India.
GCMMF reported an 8% increase in turnover for the 2023-24 financial year and expects double-digit growth this fiscal. The cooperative handles an average of 310 lakh litres of milk per day, with a total processing capacity of approximately 500 lakh litres annually. In addition to its domestic expansion, Amul now exports dairy products to over 50 countries, including a recent entry into the US market.
With this investment, GCMMF continues to advance the dairy cooperative movement, integrating global expertise into India’s dairy sector while reinforcing its presence in Bengal.
