Cargo volume at 12 major ports grew by 5% in September

Cargo volume at 12 major ports increased by 5.03% to reach 413.747 million metric tonnes (MMT) in September. The cargo transportation, during the April to August 2024 period on National Waterways reached 56.57 million metric tonnes (MMT), showing a 4.54% increase compared to the same period last year.

Shipping and Waterways, cargo volume handled by 12 major ports increased by 5.03% to 413.747 million metric tonnes (MMT) in September, according to the Ministry of Ports.

The 12 major ports are Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore (Kamarajar), Tuticorin (V O Chidambaranar), Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.  

In its monthly summary for September 2024, the ministry highlighted discussions from the 20th Maritime States Development Council (MSDC) meeting, which focused on implementing a State Ranking Framework and a Port Ranking System aimed at fostering competition and enhancing performance in India’s maritime sector.

During the meeting, over 100 issues raised by various states were addressed and resolved. The ministry also noted that several new challenges were tackled, including the establishment of Places of Refuge (PoR) for distressed ships and the development of Radioactive Detection Equipment (RDE) infrastructure at ports to improve security.

Furthermore, cargo transport on National Waterways reached 56.57 MMT between April and August 2024, indicating a 4.54% growth compared to the same period last year. 

The report also highlighted that 339,768.74 MT of cargo was transported along the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol route utilizing Inland Water Transit and Trade Routes as well as National Waterways-1.
