The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut rapid rail, also known as Namo Bharat, is set to begin operations later this year, marking a significant milestone in India’s transportation infrastructure. According to Niko Warbanoff, CEO of Deutsche Bahn (DB), which is responsible for the operation and maintenance of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), the full 82-kilometre corridor will begin service by mid-2025. Currently, DB operates 55 kilometres of the route.

The Delhi-Meerut RRTS project is poised to transform regional travel, offering a fast and efficient rail service connecting major cities in the National Capital Region (NCR). With its high-speed trains, the project aims to significantly reduce travel time, enhancing connectivity and easing congestion on roadways. Warbanoff emphasized the importance of such projects for India’s future, stating that the Delhi-Meerut corridor will serve as a model for upcoming RRTS developments across the country.

In addition to the convenience and efficiency it promises, the Delhi-Meerut RRTS will also set a precedent for future regional rail and metro projects in India. The project is an integral part of the government’s push to modernize the country’s public transport system, making it more sustainable and accessible. As India continues to urbanize rapidly, regional rapid rail systems like the Delhi-Meerut corridor are becoming essential to meet the growing demand for efficient transportation solutions.

By showcasing the potential of rapid transit systems, the Delhi-Meerut RRTS will serve as a critical example for similar projects across the subcontinent, offering a template for future infrastructure investments. This will be a significant step toward making regional travel faster, more reliable, and environmentally friendly in India.
