In the backdrop of the backlash that it received from Malaysia’s Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, India’s exporters are doing away with palm oil purchases from Kuala Lumpur. Indonesia & Ukraine have emerged as alternate sources for the country. “It’s the first time ever that India has used its heft as a trade partner to express unhappiness about a political statement”, said Bipul Chatterjee, who heads the Jaipur’s Centre for International Trade, Economics and Environment.
The region is already seeing spats between other players like South Korea & Japan, and US-China trade war.
