US urges India to lower trade barriers

As US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo set his foot on the Indian soil on Tuesday, the Trump administration made a case for India’s adoption of fair and reciprocal trade and the reduction of trade barriers. President Donald Trump tweeted that the increase in tariffs by India is ”unacceptable’ and India has already put ‘very high tariffs’ against the US for years.

“There is enormous potential to grow our trade relationship and create the high-quality jobs that Prime Minister Modi wants if India lowers trade barriers and embraces fair and reciprocal trade,” the State Department Fact Sheet stated.

Besides Mike Pompeo’s visit, US & India are also expected to engage in talks during the upcoming G20 Summit (28th-29th June) in Osaka, Japan.
