In a significant step toward deepening diplomatic and economic relations, India and Spain signed multiple memorandums of understanding (MOUs) during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Vadodara, Gujarat, on 28th October, 2024. Held at the historic Laxmi Vilas Palace, the discussions included crucial global issues and ambitious collaborative projects.
A key point of conversation was the situation in Ukraine and West Asia. PM Modi highlighted India’s enduring belief in the power of dialogue and diplomacy, expressing that “This is not the time for war.” He advocated for direct communication between the parties involved, underscoring India’s commitment to peace and stability. This stance aligns with India’s broader diplomatic approach, promoting non-violence and cooperation in resolving conflicts.
The meeting also marked an expansion of cooperation across multiple sectors. Notably, agreements were signed for infrastructure, railways, culture, and tourism. Among these, a standout agreement on rail transport collaboration will focus on enhancing the planning, design, and development of railway networks. This includes extending long-distance passenger and freight services, expected to drive economic growth and connectivity between the two nations.
The leaders also announced the “India-Spain Year of Culture, Tourism, and AI” in 2026, aiming to foster cultural exchange across music, dance, theatre, literature, and festivals. This initiative, scheduled to run from 2024 to 2028, promises to enhance people-to-people ties and build a shared appreciation for each country’s cultural heritage.
An additional MOU on customs cooperation will streamline the exchange of information, effectively combating customs offences. In line with these initiatives, Spain revealed plans to establish a consulate in Bengaluru, strengthening its presence in India’s tech hub. Earlier this year, India had inaugurated a consulate in Barcelona, facilitating greater diplomatic engagement and cultural exchange.
The high-profile Spanish delegation, consisting of ministers and executives from 15 top companies, reflects the economic and commercial potential both countries see in the partnership. This potential was further emphasized as the day concluded with PM Modi hosting a banquet lunch following the inauguration of the Tata Advanced System Limited-Airbus facility dedicated to the production of C-295 military aircraft in India. This defence collaboration underscores the strategic alignment of India and Spain, as they continue to build robust bilateral ties.
The outcomes of the Modi-Sanchez meeting signal an evolving partnership, with both nations committed to peace, innovation, and cultural exchange, fortifying their relationship for years to come.
