India is witnessing a significant transformation in consumer eating habits, with a 60% year-on-year (YoY) surge in online orders for nutritional products, driven by growing health awareness. A study by Uni-commerce, based on over 20 million processed orders from September 2024 to February 2025, highlights a booming demand for organic and healthy food products like pulses, spices, edible oils, A2 Ghee, free-range eggs, plant-based snacks, protein bars, and more.
This trend is particularly strong in Tier-3 cities, where e-commerce order volumes have jumped by 90% YoY, with Kolar, Rohtak, Sonipat, and Gandhinagar leading the charge. Tier-2 cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Nagpur, and Indore are also witnessing substantial growth. Direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands such as Marico, SriSri Tattva, The Whole Truth Foods, WickedGud, Amala Earth, and others are leveraging this shift by offering innovative and nutritious options tailored to modern consumers.
According to the dietary guidelines released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in April 2024, unhealthy diets contribute about 56.4% of the overall disease burden in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Mann Ki Baat address, also emphasized the need for reducing oil intake and tackling obesity, reinforcing the national push toward healthier lifestyles.
India’s organic food industry is poised for exponential growth, expected to rise from US$2.07 billion in 2024 to US$10.32 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 22.20%.
India’s move towards healthier eating is rapidly accelerating, driven by e-commerce accessibility, greater health awareness, and supportive policies. The rise of modern D2C brands, social media influence, and investments from platforms like Shark Tank India are boosting the “Healthy India” movement. As the market prepares for a decade of strong growth, businesses focused on sustainable and nutritious food solutions are well-positioned to benefit in this health-conscious market.
