India’s 5G sector is set for a transformative leap, with subscriptions projected to triple to 970 million by 2030, accounting for 74% of mobile users, according to an Ericsson report. Driving this growth are emerging Generative AI applications, boosting demand for 5G’s enhanced performance. By the end of 2024, 5G subscriptions are expected to hit 270 million, with global adoption surpassing 4G by 2027 and the first 6G deployments anticipated by 2030. This evolution promises to redefine India’s digital ecosystem and user experiences.
India’s 5G subscriber base is projected to grow threefold to 970 million by 2030, comprising 74% of the country’s total mobile users, according to a report by Ericsson. The Ericsson Mobility Report estimates that 5G subscriptions in India will surpass 270 million by the end of 2024, accounting for 23% of total mobile subscriptions. Globally, 5G subscriptions are expected to reach 2.3 billion by the end of 2024 and 6.3 billion by 2030, overtaking 4G subscriptions in 2027. Ericsson also forecasts the first 6G deployments in 2030.
Generative AI (GenAI) applications are emerging as a key driver for 5G performance, according to the Ericsson ConsumerLab report. In India, 67% of 5G smartphone users are expected to use GenAI apps weekly within the next five years. The report highlights that Indian smartphone users are increasingly willing to pay extra for reliable performance in video calling, streaming, and online payments. Approximately one in six 5G users are ready to spend 20% more on their monthly mobile bills for guaranteed connectivity at event venues.
Key growth factors for 5G in India include its adoption for enhanced user experiences and demand for assured network performance. Chronic therapies and international markets, especially North America, are boosting healthcare revenues, contributing to India’s telecom and digital services ecosystem expansion.
Ericsson’s research emphasizes that India’s rapid 5G adoption reflects a broader global trend, where the technology is reshaping mobile connectivity. By aligning with trends like GenAI and user-specific demands, India is positioning itself as a major player in the 5G and emerging 6G domains.
