The Indian Premier League (IPL) has solidified its reputation as a leading global sports league, with its cumulative brand value rising 13% to US$ 12 billion, according to the 17th Brand Finance IPL 2024 valuation report. Since its valuation of US$ 2 billion in 2009, the league surpassed the US$ 10-billion mark in 2023, reaching US$ 10.7 billion.

In June, Houlihan Lokey, an American investment bank, noted a 6.5% growth in IPL’s business value to US$ 16.4 billion, while its standalone brand value rose by 6.3% to US$ 3.4 billion. However, D and P Advisory reported an 11.7% decline in IPL’s enterprise value to US$ 9.9 billion in 2024, attributing this to revised media rights assessments amid industry consolidation.

Notably, four franchises—Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)—have crossed the US$ 100-million brand value mark. CSK leads with US$ 122 million (+52%), followed by MI at US$ 119 million (+36%). RCB stands third with US$ 117 million (+67%), while KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) follow at US$ 109 million (+38%) and US$ 85 million (+76%), respectively. SRH saw the fastest growth among franchises.

Rajasthan Royals increased by 30% to US$ 81 million, with Delhi Capitals rising 24% to US$ 80 million. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants have brand values of US$ 69 million (+5%) and US$ 60 million (+29%), respectively, while Punjab Kings recorded a 49% growth, reaching US$ 68 million.

The combined brand value of the top five IPL teams is US$ 551 million, significantly lower than leading football leagues like the EPL and La Liga, whose top teams’ brand values range from US$ 2.9 billion to US$ 6.7 billion.

The IPL ecosystem is today worth US$ 1.3 billion and is closely watched and emulated worldwide,” said Brand Finance India MD Ajimon Francis, emphasizing its role in inspiring global leagues and generating 1.25 million jobs in India.
