Meat production up by 5% to 10.25 million tonnes in FY24

India’s meat production increased by nearly 5% to 10.25 million tonnes in the last fiscal, according to government data. Major contribution in the total meat production was from West Bengal with 12.62 % share, followed by Uttar Pradesh (12.29%), Maharashtra (11.28 %), Telangana (10.85 %) and Andhra Pradesh (10.41 %).

Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, released on 26 Nov, the annual publication Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024, by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

As per the data, India’s meat production increased by nearly 5% to 10.25 million tonnes in the fiscal year 2023-24.

According to an official statement, “The total meat production in the country is estimated as 10.25 million tonnes during 2023-24 and registered a growth of 4.85 per cent over the past 10 years as compared to the estimates of 6.69 million tonnes in 2014-15. Further, the production was increased by 4.95 per cent in 2023-24 over 2022-23.” 

State-wise, West Bengal contributed the most to total meat production with a 12.62% share, followed by Uttar Pradesh (12.29%), Maharashtra (11.28%), Telangana (10.85%), and Andhra Pradesh (10.41%). Assam recorded the highest annual growth rate (AGR) in meat production at 17.93%, followed by Uttarakhand (15.63%) and Chhattisgarh (11.70%).

The Egg production was estimated at 142.77 billion in 2023-24, registering a 3.18% increase over the previous fiscal and a 6.8% growth over the past 10 years from 78.48 billion in 2014-15. Andhra Pradesh led with a 17.85% share of total egg production, followed by Tamil Nadu (15.64%), Telangana (12.88%), West Bengal (11.37%), and Karnataka (6.63%). Ladakh recorded the highest AGR in egg production at 75.88%, followed by Manipur (33.84%) and Uttar Pradesh (29.88%).
