Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has come out with fresh rules surrounding the logo & tagline use of Geographical Indication. As per the guidelines proposed by the Commerce and Industry Ministry, the prior sanction of DPIIT is now required by retail outlets or e- commerce platforms to use the GI logo and tagline for display and sale of Indian GI products. The ownership rights to the GI logo and tagline are vested in the DPIIT through the Secretary. Also, foreign GI products are “not allowed to use” the GI logo and tagline. Although there’ll be no fee on the usage of the logo & tagline, the duration for which they can be used will be determined by DPIIT. Indian embassies/missions & all registered proprietors and authorized users of Indian products registered under The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 have been exempted from seeking its approval. A Geographical Indication (GI) is primarily an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product (handicraft and industrial goods) originating from a specific geographical territory.
