Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Secretary T K Ramachandran announced that the new policy aims to position India among the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and the top five by 2047, from 22nd in the world at present. Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) in coordination with Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is also planning to have a JV between Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) and oil marketing companies to own large tankers.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) is developing a new shipbuilding scheme to support Indian shipyards through various incentives until 2035.
Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Secretary T K Ramachandran stated that the policy aims to elevate India to among the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and the top five by 2047, up from its current 22nd position globally.
The Secretary informed, “The model of ownership is still to be decided depending upon demand requirement and market conditions.”
Ramachandran also mentioned that MSC Cruises, a major global cruise line based in Geneva, has shown interest in operating domestic routes in India.
Additionally, MoPSW, in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, plans to establish a joint venture between the Shipping Corporation of India and oil marketing companies to manage large tankers.
Regarding green shipping initiatives, the ministry will offer 30% financial assistance for vessels using green fuels such as methanol, ammonia, or hydrogen fuel cells, and 20% support for vessels equipped with fully electric or hybrid propulsion systems.
