NITI Aayog’s recent symposium in New Delhi launched the ASSET platform to accelerate India’s state-led green transition, providing a strategic framework to help states develop and implement sustainable energy plans. The platform supports India’s goals of net-zero emissions by 2070 and a developed economy by 2047, emphasizing renewable energy innovations, funding models, and cooperative federalism.
A symposium on “Green Transition in States” was held on November 11, 2024, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, organized by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the ISEG Foundation. Attendees included prominent government officials from central and state levels, such as Sh. Suman Bery, Vice Chair of NITI Aayog, Sh. B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, and other high-ranking officials from key ministries including Power, New and Renewable Energy, and Environment, Forests & Climate Change.
During the event, NITI Aayog launched the ASSET (Accelerating Sustainable Solutions for Energy Transition) platform, designed to aid states in crafting and implementing energy transition blueprints. The ASSET platform will support states by preparing bankable projects, promoting best practices, and fostering innovation in key areas such as battery energy storage systems (BESS), green hydrogen, e-mobility, and offshore wind. This initiative aligns with India’s broader ambition to reach a net-zero emissions target by 2070 and realize the goal of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
Sh. Suman Bery discussed the need for new funding models to support renewable energy growth, stressing the importance of private sector participation. Sh. BVR Subrahmanyam highlighted ASSET’s role in supporting states through cooperative federalism and creating actionable green transition plans.
Other key speakers included Sh. RP Gupta, CMD of SECI, who emphasized the need for advanced storage solutions to address renewable energy intermittency. Ms. Leena Nandan, Secretary of MoEF&CC, discussed initiatives like LiFE and the national reforestation program. Secretaries from other ministries, including MoPNG’s Sh. Pankaj Jain and MNRE’s Sh. Prashant Kumar Singh, discussed the promotion of alternative clean fuels and the impact of government schemes such as PM-KUSUM and the PLI scheme in enhancing solar capacity.
The symposium included sessions on best practices featuring presentations from states, private sector firms, and think tanks, showcasing innovative approaches for accelerating India’s green energy transition.
