Ship-breaking capacity to be doubled

The central government has taken an initiative to double the ship-breaking capacity at Alang yard in Gujarat. This will generate employment opportunities at double the rate. By recycling about 200 ships every year Alang generates around 3.5 million tonnes of steel, stated Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, while addressing the audience at the international conference on ‘Green Ship Recycling and Vehicle Scrapping’ at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.

“The industry provides employment to 15,000 persons directly and to 1.5 lakh persons indirectly,” The Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister said. He further added that “With the proposed expansion plan of doubling the capacity of yards, the employment opportunity will also get doubled, bringing more economic prosperity in the entire region”.

Under this policy a regional trans-shipments terminal will be made as a hub and spoke in Gujarat. Giving briefing about the Sagarmala project to port-led development he mentioned that the 270 projects have been completed till now, and 802 projects is estimated to be developed by 2035.
