US ban on sea shrimps

The US has decided to continue with the ban that it imposed on sea shrimps because they are caught by vessels without turtle excluder devices along the west coast of the South Asian nation, where their presence is negligible. This has left the Indian seafood industry in jitters. The Marine Products Export Development Authority also submitted a letter to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry regarding this.

“We don’t know where they found turtles in the western coast. The sightings are rare,” stated exporter Prema Chandra Bhat, Managing Director of Mangla Marine Exim. India’s frozen shrimp export earnings are estimated at over INR 30,000 crore.
