The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS) continues to attract investors looking for a secure and predictable source of monthly income. Backed by the Government of India, the scheme offers an annual interest rate of 7.4%, making it one of the preferred savings options for individuals who prioritise capital safety over market-linked returns.
Under the current rules, an individual can invest up to ₹9 lakh in a single account, while a joint account allows investments of up to ₹15 lakh. The scheme has a fixed maturity period of five years, during which investors receive interest payouts every month, helping create a steady income stream.
At the prevailing interest rate, a maximum investment of ₹9 lakh can generate a monthly income of around ₹5,550, while a joint investment of ₹15 lakh can provide approximately ₹9,250 every month. This makes the scheme particularly attractive for retirees, pensioners and individuals seeking regular cash flow without exposing their savings to market volatility.
POMIS also offers flexibility through single, joint and minor accounts. The account can be opened at any eligible post office, and investors can choose to have the monthly interest credited directly to their savings account. However, while the principal remains protected, the interest earned is taxable according to the investor’s applicable income tax slab, and the scheme does not qualify for deductions under Section 80C.
Financial experts say the scheme is ideal for investors seeking stable monthly earnings rather than high returns. Although its returns may be lower than some market-linked investments, the government guarantee, predictable payouts and low risk continue to make POMIS a dependable option for conservative savers looking for long-term financial stability.
