The Central government has set an ambitious target of attracting Rs 10,000 crore in investments for the proposed Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ), a major initiative aimed at strengthening India’s telecom manufacturing ecosystem and boosting domestic production.
Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the investment target on Thursday during a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony with the Madhya Pradesh government. The event was attended by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Scindia said the project has already generated strong investor interest, with investment commitments worth Rs 2,000 crore secured for the first phase of development. This initial phase is expected to be completed over the next three years.
According to the minister, the government expects the second phase of the project to significantly expand the manufacturing ecosystem, taking total investments beyond Rs 10,000 crore.
The Telecom Manufacturing Zone is being developed through collaboration between the Central government and the Madhya Pradesh government. The initiative is expected to attract manufacturers of telecom equipment, components and related technologies, helping India reduce import dependence while strengthening its position in the global telecom supply chain.
The project also aligns with the government’s broader Make in India and Digital India initiatives, which seek to promote indigenous manufacturing, generate employment and enhance India’s technological capabilities.
Industry experts believe that a dedicated telecom manufacturing cluster can encourage both domestic and global companies to set up production facilities, increase exports and create a robust ecosystem for innovation and research in the telecom sector.
With telecom infrastructure and digital connectivity becoming increasingly important, the proposed manufacturing zone is expected to play a key role in supporting India’s long-term growth ambitions while creating new investment and employment opportunities in Madhya Pradesh.
