Samsung has expanded its portable SSD portfolio with the new P9 and P7 at Gamescom 2026.

Gurugram, August 27, 2026: Samsung Electronics has unveiled its next-generation P9 and P7 portable solid-state drives (SSDs) at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany. The new P Series introduces USB4 connectivity to Samsung’s portable SSD lineup, targeting users who increasingly need faster storage for high-resolution video, AI-generated content and large games.
The Samsung P9 sits at the top of the new lineup and is aimed primarily at professional and demanding users. Powered by USB4, the portable SSD delivers sequential read speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s.
According to Samsung, this makes its sequential read and write performance approximately twice that of the previous generation. The company compared it with the 4TB T9, which uses USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and offers read and write speeds of up to 2,000MB/s.
Storage capacity is another major highlight. Samsung claims the P9 is the world’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD capable of speeds of up to 4,000MB/s. The device had also received a CES 2026 Innovation Award earlier this year.
For creators dealing with extremely large files, the P9’s sustained write performance supports 12K direct recording. This is intended to allow professional users to capture and store ultra-high-resolution video and large RAW image files while simplifying demanding production workflows.
The Samsung P7, meanwhile, takes a more versatile approach. It also uses USB4 technology but is designed for storage requirements spanning work, entertainment and everyday use. Samsung says it offers compatibility with a range of devices including desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles and cameras.
Portability also brings the risk of accidental drops, so Samsung has focused on durability with the P7. The SSD has completed 2-metre drop testing as well as shock and vibration durability tests, making it better suited to travel and mobile working environments.
Both P9 and P7 will be offered in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities, with sales scheduled to begin in the first week of September.
In India, the P9 will carry MSRPs of INR 32,639 for 1TB, INR 62,399 for 2TB, INR 129,599 for 4TB and INR 259,199 for 8TB. The P7 will start at INR 27,839 for 1TB, going up to INR 52,799 for 2TB, INR 110,399 for 4TB and INR 219,839 for the 8TB model.
With the new P Series, Samsung is effectively targeting two types of buyers: professionals who need very high transfer speeds and capacities for demanding creative workloads, and everyday users looking for fast portable storage that can move easily between multiple devices.
