The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced two new UPI features that could change how users make everyday digital payments and access payment-related support. The central bank has unveiled UPI Tap & Pay and MyUPI, an AI-powered assistance platform.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announced the new features at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai.
UPI Tap & Pay is designed to make in-store payments quicker and more convenient. The feature will allow users with compatible NFC-enabled smartphones to make UPI payments by unlocking their phones and tapping them on supported point-of-sale (POS) terminals.
The feature could reduce the need to scan QR codes for certain offline transactions, particularly at stores equipped with compatible payment terminals. It brings the familiar tap-to-pay experience to the UPI ecosystem.
Alongside the contactless payment feature, RBI also announced MyUPI, an AI-powered platform aimed at improving the way users interact with UPI services.
MyUPI uses NPCI’s Small Language Model, FiMI, to provide payment-related assistance. The platform is expected to help users with areas including customer support, safety, fraud-related concerns and disputes while giving them greater control over their payment experience.
The two announcements highlight the growing focus on combining artificial intelligence and contactless technology with India’s UPI infrastructure.
For consumers, UPI Tap & Pay could make small and frequent in-store transactions more seamless where compatible infrastructure is available. MyUPI, meanwhile, could make it easier for users to seek assistance and deal with payment-related issues through an AI-based interface.
The latest additions come as UPI continues to expand beyond conventional QR-code and app-based payment experiences, with new technologies being introduced to make digital transactions faster, easier and more accessible.
