New Delhi, August 10: India’s unemployment rate remained broadly stable during the April-June quarter of 2026, with the latest government survey showing only a marginal improvement compared with the same period last year.
According to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the unemployment rate stood at 5.5% during the quarter, compared with 5.6% a year earlier. The figures indicate that the overall labour market remained largely steady without a significant expansion or contraction in joblessness.
The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), also showed that the overall worker population ratio (WPR) stood at 51.4% in June 2026. This was unchanged from the previous month but slightly higher than the 51.2% recorded in June 2025.
The urban employment market showed some improvement. Urban unemployment declined to 6.6% in June 2026 from 7.1% during the corresponding month last year. Meanwhile, rural unemployment remained broadly stable.
The labour force participation rate (LFPR), which measures the share of the working-age population that is either employed or actively seeking employment, stood at 54.4% in June 2026. The figure was unchanged from May and marginally higher than the 54.2% recorded in June 2025.
Female participation in the workforce showed a mixed trend. The overall female LFPR stood at 32.7% in June, slightly lower than 32.8% in May but 0.7 percentage points higher than the 32% recorded a year earlier.
Rural areas recorded a stronger improvement in female participation. Female LFPR in rural India rose to 36.6% in June 2026 from 35.2% in June 2025. In urban areas, however, female participation declined slightly to 24.8% from 25.2% a year earlier.
The overall WPR in rural areas remained at 53.8%, unchanged from the previous month but higher than 53.3% a year earlier. In urban areas, the ratio increased marginally to 46.8% in June from 46.6% in May.
The government estimated that an average of 56.6 crore people aged 15 years and above were employed in India during April-June 2026. Of these, around 40.2 crore were men and 16.4 crore were women.
The quarterly estimates were based on information collected from 5,59,673 people surveyed under the PLFS. Overall, the latest figures point to a largely stable employment environment, with modest improvements in urban unemployment and rural female workforce participation.
