Foreign travellers holding Indian E-Visas will now have more options to enter the country, with the Government of India notifying 11 additional international entry points.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the latest expansion includes nine land ports and two airports. With these additions, the total number of international ports authorised to allow entry to E-Visa holders has increased to 88.
The network now comprises 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports.
Bhopal and Tirupati have been added to the list of airports where foreign travellers holding valid E-Visas can enter India.
The newly added land entry points listed by the government include Agartala, Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh and Attari Road.
The government said the addition of new international entry points would further improve the attractiveness and utility of India’s electronic visa system.
The expansion comes as India continues to simplify its visa regime while strengthening the technological infrastructure supporting internal security. The government said approximately 95% of E-Visa applications are currently processed in less than 72 hours.
India introduced the E-Visa facility with Electronic Travel Authorization in 2014. At the time, the facility was available to nationals of 43 countries. It has since expanded significantly and is currently available to nationals of 172 countries.
E-Visas are presently offered under 17 sub-categories covering purposes including tourism, mountaineering, business, medical treatment, education, transit and miscellaneous travel. A Group Visitor Visa facility is also available for cruise travellers.
The growing importance of the electronic system is also reflected in its share of India’s overall visa issuance. According to the Home Ministry, approximately 78% of visas issued by India are now electronic visas.
The latest addition of airports and land ports is part of the government’s broader effort to liberalise, streamline and simplify India’s visa regime for legitimate international travellers.
The expansion could provide E-Visa holders with greater flexibility when planning their arrival in India, particularly travellers entering through land borders or destinations served by the newly authorised airports.
