Tripura’s honey industry has entered a new international market with the first-ever export of Mustard Honey by Dergang Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) to Dubai.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the export of 1 metric tonne of Mustard Honey from Tripura to Dubai, marking a new milestone for local farmers and beekeepers.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the shipment is the first-ever export of Mustard Honey from the area and creates an opportunity for farmers and beekeepers associated with Dergang FPO to participate in international agricultural markets.
The export is expected to provide improved price realisation compared with prevailing local market opportunities. Access to overseas buyers could also provide an additional source of income for beekeepers.
The initiative is expected to encourage farmers to adopt quality-focused and export-oriented honey production practices as they look to access wider markets.
M/s Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd. supported and hand-held the initiative. The company has been working with Dergang FPO to strengthen bee production and develop an export-oriented honey supply chain.
The collaboration helped the FPO take its first step into the international market while creating a structured opportunity for local farmers to participate in the export value chain.
The development is also significant for Tripura’s emerging agricultural export ecosystem, particularly its honey and beekeeping industry. The government sees potential for expanding production and exports of quality honey and other agricultural products through organised farmer collectives.
Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the shipment demonstrates the ability of local agricultural products to reach international markets and create better income opportunities for farming communities.
He said the state government remains committed to strengthening apiculture and organic agriculture while supporting FPOs in accessing wider markets.
The export consignment was flagged off by Nath in the presence of government officials, APEDA representatives, the exporter, logistics partners and beekeepers.
APEDA said it continues to work with state governments, FPOs, exporters and processors to expand agricultural exports from the North Eastern Region through market linkages, capacity building, quality assurance and export facilitation.
The successful shipment could now encourage more farmers and FPOs across Tripura and the wider Northeast to explore value addition, quality improvement and international market opportunities.
