Story
Mumbai: German luxury carmaker BMW has recorded strong growth in its certified pre-owned vehicle business in India, with sales rising 54% in the first half of 2026. The growth is significantly higher than the overall luxury car market and reflects increasing demand for premium vehicles at more accessible prices.
According to the company, a large majority of BMW’s pre-owned customers are first-time luxury car buyers. Young professionals, startup entrepreneurs and business owners are increasingly entering the premium car segment through certified used vehicles, which offer luxury ownership at a lower cost compared with buying a new car.
The BMW X1, 3 Series and 5 Series are among the leading models in the company’s pre-owned portfolio. SUVs and sedans currently account for about 50% each of BMW’s used-car sales.
Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO of BMW Group India, said customers today are better informed and want clarity on a vehicle’s service history, condition, resale value and running costs before making a purchase. This is helping organised and certified pre-owned programmes gain traction.
Pre-owned car buyers have traditionally placed significant importance on trust and transparency. BMW’s certified programme aims to address these concerns by offering inspected vehicles and providing customers with information about their ownership and service history.
Demand has also benefited from price increases in new cars over the past few years, which have widened the gap between new and well-maintained pre-owned vehicles. This has encouraged buyers to evaluate used luxury cars based on ownership cost and value.
BMW is now planning to expand its certified pre-owned ecosystem. The company aims to increase its retail presence from around 40 cities to approximately 50 cities within a year, with pre-owned vehicle availability expected to expand beyond its existing network.
The company is also preparing for the emerging used electric vehicle market. BMW expects meaningful volumes of its EVs, including models such as the iX1 LWB, to eventually enter the certified pre-owned channel as their initial ownership cycles mature.
With buyers increasingly considering service history, battery condition, resale value and running costs, BMW expects the organised premium used-car market in India to continue expanding.
