Mumbai, August 18: VFS Global has launched Maharashtra’s first Model Sub-Registrar Office (SRO) in Pune as part of an initiative to modernise and digitally transform property registration services across the state.
The new centre is the first under a wider programme that will see 60 state-of-the-art Model SROs established across Maharashtra in a phased manner.
VFS Global is implementing the project in consortium with WE Excel Software Pvt Ltd.
60 Model SROs planned across Maharashtra
In early 2026, the consortium secured a five-year contract from the Inspector General of Registration and Controller of Stamps under the Government of Maharashtra.
Under the contract, 60 Model Sub-Registrar Offices are to be established across the state.
The Pune facility marks the beginning of the planned rollout and is intended to provide citizens with a modern alternative for completing property registration-related processes.
The centres are expected to combine upgraded physical infrastructure with digital systems and streamlined service delivery.
Existing government offices to continue
The Model SROs will operate as an optional service and will not replace Maharashtra’s existing government-run registration offices.
Citizens will therefore continue to have access to regular government Sub-Registrar Offices while gaining an additional option through the new centres.
The model is designed to improve convenience while retaining government supervision over the property registration process.
Focus on faster and transparent services
Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the initiative combines strong government oversight with modern infrastructure, digital systems and efficient service delivery.
The objective is to create a faster, more transparent and convenient registration experience for citizens, he said.
Property registration is a key administrative process for homebuyers, landowners and other participants in the real estate market, making efficiency and transparency important components of service delivery.
Digital transformation of property registration
