New Delhi, August 20: A high-level Indian ministerial delegation led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Thursday and discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation across economic development, digitalisation, connectivity, skills and sustainability.
The delegation also includes External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada.
The meeting took place during the Indian delegation’s visit to Singapore for the fourth India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable, being held on August 19 and 20.
Strategic partnership reviewed
According to the Finance Ministry, the leaders reviewed progress in implementing the Roadmap for the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Singapore.
The discussions also focused on identifying opportunities to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Economic cooperation remains an important pillar of the relationship, alongside emerging areas such as digital technologies, connectivity and sustainable development.
Fourth India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable
The fourth India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable provides a high-level platform for ministers from the two countries to review existing cooperation and identify new areas for collaboration.
The ISMR was established in 2022 as a bilateral economic mechanism.
It brings together senior ministers from both governments and provides a structured framework for discussions covering strategically important sectors.
Sitharaman is leading the Indian ministerial delegation participating in this year’s roundtable.
Six pillars of cooperation
The India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable focuses on six principal areas of cooperation: advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalisation, healthcare and medicine, skills development, and sustainability.
These areas reflect the expanding nature of economic engagement between the two countries.
Advanced manufacturing offers opportunities for collaboration in technology-intensive production and investment, while digitalisation can support cooperation around financial technology, digital infrastructure and technology-enabled services.
Connectivity remains important for strengthening movement of goods, capital and people between India and Singapore.
Skills and sustainability in focus
Skills development was another area highlighted during the discussions with the Singapore Prime Minister.
As both economies adopt more advanced technologies, developing workers with specialised technical and digital capabilities is becoming increasingly important.
Sustainability is also a core pillar of the bilateral mechanism, creating opportunities for cooperation in areas related to clean technologies, sustainable finance and lower-carbon economic development.
Singapore remains key economic partner
Singapore has long played an important role in India’s economic engagement with Southeast Asia and serves as a major financial, investment and commercial hub.
The ministerial roundtable provides both countries with a mechanism to expand cooperation beyond traditional trade and investment into emerging strategic sectors.
The involvement of ministers responsible for finance, foreign affairs, commerce and technology reflects the increasingly broad scope of the bilateral relationship.
Cooperation expands into new sectors
The discussions with Prime Minister Wong underline efforts by India and Singapore to translate their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into practical initiatives across multiple sectors.
The six-pillar framework allows both sides to simultaneously pursue opportunities in manufacturing, technology, healthcare, human capital and sustainability.
The fourth ISMR is expected to further review progress made under these areas and explore new initiatives aimed at strengthening long-term economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
