New Delhi: The Central Government has dismissed reports and social media claims suggesting that it plans to monetise gold held by temples and religious institutions across the country. In an official clarification issued by Press Information Bureau, the government described such reports as “false, misleading, and completely baseless.”
According to the statement released on Monday, several media reports and online posts had claimed that the government was preparing to issue gold bonds in exchange for gold reserves owned by temples. Some reports also alleged that a proposal had already been approved for the monetisation of temple gold holdings. However, the government categorically denied these claims and clarified that no such proposal is under consideration.
The clarification further addressed rumours suggesting that gold plating on temple towers, doors, and other religious structures could be treated as part of India’s “Strategic Gold Reserves.” The government stated that these claims are entirely false and have no factual basis.
Officials said the spread of unverified information on social media can create unnecessary confusion among the public and may lead to misinformation regarding sensitive religious matters. The government urged citizens not to believe or circulate rumours related to temple gold monetisation without confirmation from official sources.
