The ₹3,113 Burn: Commercial LPG Hiked Again as War Fallout Batters Kitchen Budgets

Highlights

  • The Record Peak: The price of a 19kg commercial LPG cylinder has jumped by ₹42, setting the new price at ₹3,113.50 in Delhi. INDToday
  • The Six-Month Double: Driven by relentless geopolitical friction, commercial cooking gas prices have nearly doubled since December 2025, when a cylinder cost just ₹1,580. Business Today
  • Geopolitical Fuel: The primary driver is the intense US-Iran war, which historically strangled maritime trade through the vital Strait of Hormuz chokepoint. Discovery Alert
  • Domestic Shield: In a bid to protect household budgets from rampant inflation, state-run oil marketing companies have kept domestic 14.2kg cylinders completely unchanged.

NEW DELHI — Running a commercial kitchen in India just became a lot more expensive. On Monday, state-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) unleashed yet another stinging price hike, pushing the cost of a 19kg commercial LPG cylinder up by ₹42.

Effective June 1, a commercial cylinder will now cost a staggering ₹3,113.50 in Delhi. For the small-scale dhabas, high-end restaurants, and local caterers who anchor India’s bustling food industry, it is a bitter pill to swallow. The smaller 5kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders did not escape the chopping block either, climbing by ₹11 to retail at ₹821.50 in the capital.

While household consumers can breathe a temporary sigh of relief—prices for the standard 14.2kg domestic cylinders remain firmly frozen—the broader economic landscape is flashing warning signs.

Six Months of Relentless Surges

To understand the sheer velocity of this crisis, one only needs to look back half a year. In December 2025, a commercial LPG cylinder sat at a manageable ₹1,580. Today, that cost has virtually doubled. June’s revision marks the sixth time cooking gas prices have been hiked in the first half of 2026 alone, creating an unprecedented administrative headache for businesses nationwide.

Metro CityNew 19kg Commercial LPG Rate (June 1)
Mumbai₹3,024.00
Delhi₹3,113.50
Chennai₹3,237.00
Kolkata₹3,255.50

The Strait of Hormuz Shadow

This isn’t a localized supply hiccup; it is the direct fallout of global warfare. The fierce military conflict between the US-Israel coalition and Iran completely upended global energy dynamics earlier this year. When the critical maritime chokepoint—the Strait of Hormuz—was effectively blocked, it choked off nearly 20% of the world’s oil trade.

Because India relies heavily on the Gulf region for 90% of its LPG supplies and 65% of its natural gas, the shockwaves were immediate. Even with recent ceasefire talks, insurance premiums for cargo ships remain astronomically high, and local refineries are scrambling to maintain 30-day strategic fuel reserves to shield the economy from sudden supply drops.

As the new pricing tier rolls out across major hubs like Kolkata (peaking at ₹3,255.50) and Chennai (at ₹3,237.00), the restaurant sector faces a harsh choice: absorb the crippling overhead costs, or pass the bill down to regular consumers already struggling with everyday inflation.

This video provides critical background context on how the escalating conflict in the Middle East has disrupted shipping lines and directly triggered the soaring energy and cooking gas prices across Asian markets.
