India is continuing discussions with the United States regarding proposed tariffs under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974 while simultaneously working to finalize a bilateral trade framework agreement. The proposed tariffs are currently under consultation and have not yet been finalized.
India remains actively engaged with the United States over proposed tariff measures under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974, according to a statement released by the Government of India on June 3, 2026.
The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has concluded investigations involving 60 economies, including India, concerning measures adopted by these economies to restrict imports. Following the investigations, the USTR has proposed additional tariffs on imports from these economies under Section 301 provisions.
However, the proposed tariffs are not yet final. Stakeholders have been invited to participate in the consultation process, with requests for public hearing participation accepted until June 22, 2026. Written comments can be submitted until July 6, 2026, while public hearings are scheduled for July 7, 2026. The USTR will review all submissions before making a final determination.
The proposal excludes products already covered under Section 232 tariffs as well as certain other categories. Additionally, a special mechanism has been proposed for textile and apparel products that could allow limited import volumes from selected economies to enter the U.S. market at reduced tariff rates.
India is participating in the ongoing Section 301 proceedings while also continuing negotiations with the United States on a broader trade framework agreement. The framework discussions stem from commitments announced on February 2, 2026, and the joint statement issued on February 7, 2026.
The development highlights the parallel track being followed by both countries—addressing trade concerns through official proceedings while working toward a comprehensive framework aimed at strengthening bilateral economic ties.
