Jharkhand Marks Export Milestone with First Commercial Shipment of Fresh Mangoes to the United Kingdom
New Delhi/Ranchi, June 7, 2026: Jharkhand has entered India’s growing agricultural export landscape with the successful shipment of its first commercial consignment of fresh mangoes to the United Kingdom. The export, facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is being viewed as a major step toward integrating the state’s farmers with international markets.
The inaugural shipment, flagged off in Kolkata on June 4, consisted of 1.5 metric tonnes of fresh Amrapali mangoes sourced from Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd., an all-women Farmer Producer Company located in Bano Block of Simdega district in Jharkhand.
The mangoes are being exported by JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd. to London, opening a new international market for farmers in the state.
APEDA’s Capacity-Building Initiative Leads to Export Success
The export is the direct outcome of an export-oriented capacity-building programme organized by APEDA on May 5, 2026. The training programme was conducted for Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and progressive farmers from Simdega district.
The initiative focused on educating farmers about export procedures, international quality standards, post-harvest management, packaging requirements, and global market opportunities.
Following the programme, APEDA facilitated a business linkage between Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd. and JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd., enabling the procurement of export-grade mangoes from local growers.
Officials noted that the collaboration helped bridge the gap between small-scale producers and international buyers, creating a direct route for farmers to participate in the global agricultural value chain.
Women Farmers at the Centre of Export Growth
A notable aspect of the shipment is the role played by the women-led Beura Farmer Producer Company. The organization represents women farmers from the region and has emerged as a model for community-driven agricultural entrepreneurship.
Through direct participation in the export process, member farmers were able to secure higher prices for their produce compared to prevailing domestic market rates. The success is expected to encourage more women-led agricultural collectives to explore export opportunities.
Experts believe that such initiatives can significantly improve rural incomes while promoting financial inclusion and entrepreneurship among women farmers.
Amrapali Mangoes Gain International Recognition
The exported consignment featured the popular Amrapali variety, a mango known for its rich sweetness, deep orange pulp, attractive color, and longer shelf life. The variety enjoys strong consumer acceptance in both domestic and international markets.
Jharkhand’s agro-climatic conditions are particularly suitable for horticultural cultivation, and the state has been steadily increasing production of fruits and vegetables over recent years.
The successful export demonstrates the growing potential of Jharkhand’s horticulture sector and could pave the way for future exports of mangoes and other agricultural commodities from the region.
Boost for Agricultural Exports
APEDA has been actively working to expand India’s agricultural export footprint by supporting market development, traceability systems, quality enhancement initiatives, and capacity-building programmes for farmer groups.
The authority also places special emphasis on integrating women-led and tribal producer organizations into export-oriented agriculture, helping farmers access premium international markets.
With this shipment, Jharkhand joins a growing list of Indian states exporting fresh fruits to global destinations. Industry observers believe the achievement could inspire more Farmer Producer Organizations across the state to adopt export-oriented farming practices and invest in quality improvements.
Gateway to Global Markets
The first commercial export of fresh mangoes from Jharkhand is being viewed as a landmark achievement for the state’s agricultural sector. Beyond generating higher incomes for farmers, the initiative showcases the potential of organized farmer collectives to meet international standards and compete in global markets.
As demand for premium Indian fruits continues to grow worldwide, successful exports such as this could strengthen India’s position as a leading supplier of fresh produce while creating new opportunities for rural communities across emerging agricultural regions.
