The Central Government has announced a significant relief measure for onion farmers ahead of the 23rd installment of the PM Kisan Yojana. Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the government has increased the Minimum Assured Purchase Price (MAPP) for onions to ensure better returns for farmers and strengthen the procurement system.
The decision was taken after a detailed review meeting involving senior officials of the Department of Consumer Affairs. Discussions focused on protecting farmers’ interests and making the onion procurement process more effective.
Under the revised policy, the government will procure storage-grade onions at ₹1,650 per quintal, considering current market conditions and prevailing onion prices. The new rate has become effective from June 13, 2026.
Apart from revising the purchase price, the government has also updated the pricing mechanism to better align with market realities. Officials believe the move will help onion growers secure fair compensation for their produce while reducing the impact of sudden price declines.
The government said the initiative is expected to strengthen farmers’ incomes, stabilize onion prices, and support a balanced supply chain in the domestic market.
Notably, onions do not have a formal Minimum Support Price (MSP) because they are classified as a perishable crop. Instead, the government procures onions under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF) mechanism at a Minimum Assured Purchase Price to protect farmers from financial losses during periods of low market prices.
