Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that India is likely to witness fresh investments in memory chip manufacturing as companies move to address a growing global shortage of advanced semiconductor components used in artificial intelligence and data centres.
According to the minister, several new players are expected to enter the memory chip segment, while existing manufacturers are planning to expand their production capacities to meet rising demand.
The surge in AI adoption worldwide has significantly increased demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips and other advanced storage components. This demand has tightened global supplies and pushed up prices in recent quarters, increasing manufacturing costs for consumer electronics such as smartphones, laptops, and other digital devices.
Vaishnaw noted that the semiconductor industry is experiencing an unprecedented supply-demand imbalance, particularly for memory chips used in AI infrastructure. He said the rapid expansion of AI data centres around the world has created shortages of critical components required for high-performance computing and data processing.
India’s data centre sector is also witnessing rapid growth, with investments expected to surpass $200 billion in the near future. Such expansion is likely to require massive storage infrastructure and billions of gigabytes of memory capacity, further boosting demand for semiconductor manufacturing.
The minister highlighted recent progress in domestic semiconductor production, citing the commencement of commercial manufacturing by Micron Technology and other facilities as important milestones in strengthening the supply chain.
He added that new manufacturing units being established globally and in India are expected to gradually ease the shortage, though the demand for advanced memory technologies remains exceptionally strong due to continued growth in AI applications.
Industry experts believe increased investments in semiconductor and memory chip production could help India strengthen its position in the global electronics manufacturing ecosystem while reducing dependence on imports.
