New Delhi, June 24: Indian entrepreneur Kunal Shah has been appointed to lead WhatsApp globally, becoming one of the most prominent Indian-origin executives to take charge of a major global technology platform. The move comes alongside Meta’s reported $900 million investment in CRED, the fintech company founded by Shah.
Despite not being an IIT or IIM graduate, Shah built a strong reputation through ventures such as CRED and FreeCharge, earning recognition for his understanding of consumer behavior, digital payments and financial technology. Industry observers view his appointment as a sign that entrepreneurial experience and product-building skills are increasingly valued over traditional academic credentials in global technology leadership.
The announcement has also sparked discussions around data privacy because CRED manages financial information for millions of users. However, reports indicate that Meta’s investment does not include access to CRED customer data, and the two companies are expected to operate independently from a data-sharing perspective.
Analysts believe Meta’s decision is closely linked to WhatsApp’s future as a commerce and payments platform, particularly in India, which remains WhatsApp’s largest market. The appointment signals Meta’s intention to strengthen financial services, business messaging and digital transactions across the WhatsApp ecosystem.
With more than three billion users globally and hundreds of millions in India, WhatsApp’s next phase under Shah is expected to focus on expanding monetization opportunities while maintaining user trust and platform growth.
