News Story
New Delhi, June 30: The Central Government has extended the deadline for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) by one month, allowing taxpayers to submit pending appeals until July 31, 2026.
The extension comes after industry bodies and tax professionals raised concerns over technical issues on the GSTAT portal, which witnessed a sharp increase in filings as the newly operational tribunal gained momentum.
According to the Ministry, nearly 30,000 appeals were filed in the past 15 days, with daily submissions touching 5,500 appeals, leading to heavy traffic and procedural challenges on the portal.
Tax experts welcomed the decision, stating that the additional time would ensure taxpayers are not deprived of their legal right to appeal due to technological or procedural bottlenecks.
The Ministry has also advised taxpayers to complete their filings well before the revised deadline to avoid last-minute congestion on the portal.
Experts noted that while the extension offers much-needed relief, the GSTAT has limited powers to condone delays under the GST law. Therefore, timely filing remains crucial for preserving the right to appeal.
Launched in September 2025 and operational since February 2026, the GST Appellate Tribunal is expected to significantly reduce the backlog of indirect tax disputes and provide a dedicated platform for resolving GST-related litigation across the country.
