The European Union has described India as a key strategic partner for semiconductors, highlighting the country’s skilled talent pool and growing capabilities in chip research and manufacturing. The remarks were made during the third India-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting in Brussels.
European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said the EU is working with trusted partners to diversify semiconductor supply chains and reduce dependence on a limited number of global suppliers. India plays an important role due to its strong engineering and research capabilities.
The discussions also covered cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, high-performance computing and 6G technologies. Both sides agreed to deepen technology collaboration as part of their strategic partnership.
India recently approved the Semicon 2.0 programme with an outlay of about USD 13.25 billion to strengthen semiconductor manufacturing, chip design, research, packaging and talent development. The initiative aims to accelerate domestic semiconductor production.
Officials from both India and the European Union said closer collaboration will improve supply chain resilience, encourage joint research and support innovation in advanced technologies, reinforcing long-term economic and technological cooperation.
