India has entered a new era of sustainable rail transport with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country’s first hydrogen fuel-cell train from Jind in Haryana, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey towards clean energy and advanced railway technology.
The hydrogen train is an important step in reducing carbon emissions from the railway sector and reflects India’s growing focus on green mobility. With this launch, India joins a select group of countries that have developed hydrogen-powered train technology.
Speaking at the launch event, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described the project as a historic technological achievement. He said the successful development of the hydrogen train showcases India’s growing strength in indigenous innovation and engineering. According to the minister, the country is no longer just adopting global technologies but is now developing cutting-edge solutions on its own.
The train uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, producing only water vapour as a by-product. This makes it a cleaner alternative to diesel-powered trains, helping reduce pollution while improving energy efficiency. The project also includes infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage, refuelling, operation and maintenance, creating a complete hydrogen ecosystem for Indian Railways.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini called the launch a proud moment for both the state and the country. He said the project strengthens the vision of Clean Energy, Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat while opening new opportunities for sustainable transportation.
The hydrogen train initiative also supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Railway officials believe the experience gained from this project will help expand hydrogen-based rail services to other suitable routes in the coming years as green hydrogen becomes more widely available and cost-effective.
