Bihar has achieved a major milestone in agricultural exports with the first-ever sea shipment of value-added flavoured Makhana (fox nuts) to Canada. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitated the export, marking another step towards expanding India’s processed food exports.
The shipment consisted of 7 metric tonnes of flavoured Makhana packed in two containers. It was dispatched from Darbhanga, Bihar, through Mundra Port and is destined for ZKV Foods in Canada. The products were processed and packaged by Nutrivin Agro Private Limited while meeting international quality and food safety standards.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev said the achievement reflects the combined efforts of farmers, exporters, processors, and government agencies. He noted that such initiatives are strengthening Bihar’s agri-export ecosystem and helping the state’s premium products gain access to international markets.
Bihar is India’s largest producer of Makhana, a nutritious snack that has gained popularity globally because of increasing demand for healthy and value-added food products. By exporting flavoured and processed Makhana instead of raw produce, farmers are earning over 50% higher returns, highlighting the benefits of value addition and branding.
The initiative also showcases Bihar’s growing food processing capabilities and the potential of export-oriented manufacturing. APEDA has been supporting the state through export infrastructure development, quality certification, capacity building, market access, and collaboration with Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), processors, and exporters.
Officials believe the successful shipment will encourage more exports of premium agricultural products from Bihar while creating sustainable income opportunities for farmers and strengthening India’s presence in global food markets.
