New Delhi, Feb 25: As artificial intelligence continues to reshape education, Indian startup SpeakX.ai is using AI-powered conversational learning to tackle one of the country’s biggest employability challenges—spoken English proficiency. The platform, founded by Arpit Mittal, now serves more than 2 million monthly learners, with a strong presence in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
Despite English being taught in schools across India, many students struggle to speak the language confidently due to limited opportunities for practical conversation. SpeakX.ai aims to bridge this gap through an AI-native learning model that focuses on real-time speaking practice rather than traditional grammar-heavy lessons.
According to Mittal, the platform was designed around artificial intelligence from the outset rather than adding AI features to an existing product. The system acts simultaneously as a teacher, conversation partner, and feedback engine, allowing learners to practice English through realistic scenarios such as job interviews, workplace discussions, customer interactions, and everyday conversations.
Unlike conventional learning apps that rely heavily on videos and recorded lessons, SpeakX.ai places users in interactive conversations where pronunciation, grammar, and usage are corrected instantly. The AI adapts each session based on individual responses, creating a personalized learning experience tailored to every learner.
One of the biggest challenges for AI-based language learning in India is the country’s linguistic diversity. With 22 official languages and thousands of dialects, speech recognition systems often struggle to accurately understand Indian accents. SpeakX.ai claims its speech recognition technology achieves around 95 percent accuracy for Indian English speakers by training models on voice samples collected from multiple regions and language backgrounds.
The platform supports 14 Indian languages, allowing users to begin learning in their native language before gradually transitioning to English. Rather than attempting to eliminate regional accents, the system focuses on improving clarity and communication effectiveness.
The startup says nearly 60 percent of its users come from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where access to affordable spoken-English coaching is often limited. To make the service accessible, the company offers subscriptions starting at ₹199 per month, while ensuring compatibility with entry-level Android devices and low-bandwidth internet connections.
Industry experts believe spoken English remains a critical factor in employability across sectors such as customer service, sales, IT, retail, and corporate services. Many job seekers can read and understand English but lack the confidence to communicate effectively during interviews and workplace interactions.
Mittal argues that AI should not be viewed as a replacement for teachers. Instead, he sees it as a tool that removes limitations on practice time, giving learners unlimited opportunities to speak, make mistakes, and improve without fear of embarrassment. Human educators, he says, continue to play an important role in mentorship, motivation, and personalized guidance.
The company’s current success follows a major business pivot. SpeakX.ai emerged from Yellow Class, an online hobby-learning platform launched during the pandemic. After demand declined when schools reopened, the company shifted its focus to spoken English learning in 2023. Since then, SpeakX.ai has grown rapidly, attracting over 10 million downloads, more than 200,000 paying subscribers, and achieving positive operating margins.
As AI-powered education gains momentum across India, platforms such as SpeakX.ai are demonstrating how technology can help address skill gaps at scale. With millions of learners already using conversational AI to improve communication skills, the company believes practical speaking practice could play a significant role in improving employability and confidence among India’s growing workforce.
