India’s domestic air passenger traffic declined 6.34% year-on-year in August 2026 to 12.13 million passengers, while IndiGo retained a dominant 65% market share.
Domestic airlines carried 12.13 million passengers in August 2026, down from 12.95 million in the same month a year earlier, according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Passenger traffic also recorded a marginal month-on-month decline. Domestic airlines had carried 12.03 million passengers in July, with the August figure representing a 1.05% change from the previous month.
IndiGo remained the largest domestic airline with a 65% market share in August 2026, although this was lower than its 67.4% share in July.
The Air India Group increased its share from 24% in July to 27% in August. Akasa Air accounted for 5.5% of the market, while SpiceJet had a 1.2% share. Other airlines together accounted for 1.6%.
Passenger load factor data showed SpiceJet at 79.9%, IndiGo at 79.2%, Akasa Air at 87.6% and the Air India Group at 77%.
The August data showed that domestic aviation remained concentrated among the two largest airline groups, even as overall passenger traffic was lower than a year earlier.
