Story
New Delhi, July 4: Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged across India on Saturday, July 4, even as global crude oil prices continued to soften. Brent crude has fallen to a four-month low following easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, raising hopes among consumers for a reduction in retail fuel prices. However, an immediate cut appears unlikely.
According to the government, Indian oil marketing companies are currently processing and selling fuel produced from crude oil that was purchased when international prices were significantly higher during the peak of the West Asia conflict. As a result, the benefit of lower global crude prices has not yet been passed on to consumers.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said domestic fuel retailers are still working through inventories acquired at elevated prices. Once these higher-cost stocks are exhausted and lower-priced crude becomes a larger part of the supply chain, companies may be in a better position to review retail fuel prices.
For now, petrol and diesel rates remain stable in major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. The unchanged prices provide certainty for consumers and businesses, but many vehicle owners continue to wait for relief after recent periods of elevated fuel costs.
Fuel prices in India are influenced by several factors, including international crude oil prices, exchange rates, refining costs, freight charges, taxes imposed by the Centre and states, and the pricing decisions of public sector oil marketing companies.
Although global crude prices have declined in recent weeks, retail fuel prices do not always move in tandem because companies first need to recover the cost of previously purchased crude inventories.
Experts say if international crude prices remain lower for an extended period and no fresh geopolitical disruptions emerge, consumers could eventually benefit from lower petrol and diesel prices. Until then, motorists are likely to continue paying existing rates while oil companies balance inventory costs with market conditions.
