The Bureau of Indian Standards has revised hallmarking charges for gold and silver articles, with the new fee structure taking effect from September 14, 2026, ahead of the festive jewellery-buying season.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has revised hallmarking fees for gold and silver articles under the amended Hallmarking Regulations, 2026. The revised charges became effective with the publication of the notification in the Official Gazette on September 14.
Under the new structure, jewellers submitting gold articles to recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) will pay ₹75 per article, subject to a minimum charge of ₹200 per consignment. For silver articles, the hallmarking fee has been fixed at ₹35 per article, with a minimum charge of ₹150 per consignment.
The notification also revises the amount that Assaying and Hallmarking Centres levy on behalf of BIS. For gold articles, this has been fixed at ₹7.50 per article, with a minimum of ₹20 per consignment. For silver, the corresponding charge is ₹3.50 per article, subject to a minimum of ₹15 per consignment. Applicable taxes will be charged separately.
Hallmarking is used to certify the purity of precious-metal articles. BIS-hallmarked jewellery carries identifiers including the BIS mark, the karat or millesimal fineness of the metal and a six-digit Hallmark Unique Identification, or HUID, code.
The revision comes ahead of the festive and wedding-buying period, when demand for gold and silver jewellery typically increases. The higher hallmarking charges will therefore become another cost component for jewellers to consider while preparing inventories for the season.
For consumers, hallmarking remains an important mechanism for verifying the stated purity of jewellery. Buyers may also need to consider hallmarking charges alongside metal prices, making charges and other applicable costs when reviewing the final jewellery bill.
The revised structure represents an increase from the earlier hallmarking charges of ₹35 per gold article and ₹25 per silver article.
