New Delhi, August 12: Gold and silver prices moved higher on Wednesday, with gold gaining ₹158 and silver rising ₹46, according to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA).
The price of 10 grams of 24-carat gold increased to ₹1.53 lakh, while silver reached ₹2.35 lakh per kilogram. The latest gains have added to the sharp rise seen in the precious metals market during August.
Gold has become around ₹10,000 more expensive in just 12 days of August, while silver has gained approximately ₹16,000 during the same period.
Gold has also recorded a strong increase during 2026. From above ₹1.33 lakh per 10 grams on December 31, 2025, the price has climbed to around ₹1.53 lakh. Silver, meanwhile, has increased from approximately ₹2.30 lakh per kg at the end of 2025 to ₹2.35 lakh currently.
Both metals had also touched record highs earlier this year. Gold reached ₹1.76 lakh per 10 grams on January 29, while silver touched ₹3.86 lakh per kg on the same day.
Commodity expert Ajay Kedia said gold and silver prices are currently well below their earlier highs, attracting investors. However, he advised investors to avoid making a lump-sum investment in these assets. According to his assessment, gold could reach ₹1.60 lakh per 10 grams and silver ₹2.80 lakh per kg by the end of the year.
Investors looking to gain exposure to precious metals can also consider exchange-traded funds. Gold ETFs and Silver ETFs track the respective metal prices and can be bought and sold on stock exchanges such as the BSE and NSE through a demat and trading account.
The source also highlights the importance of checking certification and prices while purchasing physical gold. Buyers are advised to look for BIS hallmarking and cross-check the applicable gold price and weight from reliable sources before making a purchase.
For silver, the source lists magnet, ice, smell and cloth tests as methods for checking authenticity. However, these household tests should not be treated as definitive proof of purity; certified hallmarking or professional testing is more reliable.
