New Delhi: In a monumental diplomatic and strategic victory, India has established a dominant foothold in the global fight against financial crimes. For the first time in history, an Indian official has been chosen to occupy a top-tier leadership position at the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Vivek Aggarwal, a seasoned 1994-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been elected as the Vice President of this elite inter-governmental watchdog. Aggarwal currently serves as the Secretary in the Ministry of Culture under the Government of India.
The selection of an Indian for this critical role marks a proud moment for the nation and highlights its rising influence on the international stage. The FATF, headquartered in Paris, France, operates as the global standard-setter for combating money laundering, terrorist financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The Vice President is democratically elected by the FATF Plenary members and plays a pivotal role in assisting the President to drive the organization’s strategic mandates and evaluate country-specific compliances.
This high-profile appointment comes on the heels of India’s stellar performance during its recent “Mutual Evaluation”—a rigorous peer-review process conducted by the FATF to assess a country’s legal and institutional framework against financial crimes. India’s proactive contributions toward shaping global regulations on emerging risks, such as virtual digital assets, cryptocurrencies, and complex digital payment ecosystems, acted as a primary catalyst for this decision. With a global network spanning more than 200 jurisdictions, the FATF’s acknowledgment of Indian leadership underscores the country’s unyielding financial integrity.
Expressing his gratitude on this historic appointment, Vivek Aggarwal stated that the opportunity represents India’s collective and institutional efforts against global financial threats. He reaffirmed his absolute commitment to keeping the international financial architecture safe, resilient, inclusive, and secure against illicit networks.
The FATF remains the ultimate authority that monitors how effectively countries implement its anti-money laundering frameworks, famously maintaining “grey” and “black” lists for non-compliant nations. With the FATF President serving a two-year term, Aggarwal’s role as Vice President will be indispensable in shaping international security and economic policies over the coming years, cementing India’s legacy as a major global policymaker.
