New Delhi, May 29, 2026: With rising electricity bills pushing households toward renewable energy, rooftop solar installations are rapidly gaining popularity across India. Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the government is offering financial subsidies for installing solar panels at homes.

If you are planning to install a solar system, it is important to understand how much rooftop space is required based on your electricity consumption, along with the subsidy details and online application process.

Space Required for Solar Panels

Solar panels should ideally be installed in an open area where sunlight reaches directly without obstruction.

1kW Solar System

A 1kW rooftop solar system generally requires around 100 square feet of space. This setup is suitable for small households with lower electricity usage.

2kW Solar System

For a 2kW solar setup, approximately 200 square feet of rooftop space is needed. This is ideal for medium-sized homes with moderate power consumption.

3kW Solar System

A 3kW solar system requires nearly 300 square feet of space. Larger families and households with higher electricity usage often prefer this capacity.

Government Subsidy Details

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the government provides financial assistance for rooftop solar installations.

  • ₹30,000 subsidy for 1kW systems
  • ₹60,000 subsidy for 2kW systems
  • Up to ₹78,000 subsidy for 3kW and above systems

The scheme aims to reduce electricity expenses for households while promoting clean and sustainable energy adoption across the country.

How to Apply Online

The registration process for the scheme is completely online.

  1. Visit the official rooftop solar portal.
  2. Select your state and DISCOM.
  3. Enter your electricity consumer number.
  4. Upload the required documents and submit the application.
  5. After submission, the DISCOM technical team will inspect the site.
