New Delhi, May 27: The Income Tax Department has enabled online filing of ITR-2 for the Assessment Year 2026-27 on its official e-filing portal, allowing eligible taxpayers to begin submitting their income tax returns for the financial year 2025-26.

The announcement was made by the Income Tax Department through an official update on Wednesday.

Who Can File ITR-2?

ITR-2 is meant for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not earn income from business or professional activities but have earnings from sources such as:

  • Capital gains
  • Multiple house properties
  • Foreign income or foreign assets
  • High-value investments and other income sources

Tax experts say the form is commonly used by salaried individuals with stock market gains, property sales, or overseas investments.

Earlier Forms Already Activated

Earlier this month, the department had enabled online filing for:

  • ITR-1
  • ITR-4

These forms are mainly used by salaried individuals, pensioners, freelancers, and small business taxpayers under presumptive taxation schemes.

The forms for AY 2026-27 were officially notified on March 30.

Filing Deadlines Announced

The Income Tax Department has maintained the following deadlines for return filing:

  • July 31, 2026 — Last date for filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 for individual taxpayers
  • August 31, 2026 — Deadline for non-audit taxpayers filing ITR-4

With both online utilities and Excel-based filing options now available, taxpayers can start filing returns through the e-filing portal.

Focus on Faster Digital Tax Filing

The government continues to expand digital tax services and online compliance systems to simplify the filing process for taxpayers.

Experts advise taxpayers to complete return filing early to avoid last-minute technical issues, delayed refunds, or penalties.

They also recommend verifying Form 26AS, Annual Information Statements (AIS), and tax deduction records before submitting returns.
