The Government of India has initiated a major revamp of the country’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum with a focus on practical learning, industry collaboration, faculty development and advanced digital infrastructure to prepare students for emerging technology-driven jobs.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw chaired a high-level meeting with the AI Curriculum Taskforce in New Delhi to review recommendations aimed at modernising AI education across engineering and technical institutions.

The taskforce, working in collaboration with NASSCOM and industry experts, conducted a baseline assessment of existing B.Tech Computer Science and allied curricula across Indian institutions. While the study found that AI-related topics have expanded significantly in recent years, it highlighted major gaps in pedagogy, practical exposure, infrastructure and emerging areas such as Generative AI, MLOps and foundational AI model development.

The proposed framework aims to move away from traditional lecture-based teaching toward application-oriented learning from the very first semester. The revamped curriculum will include real-world industry use cases, credit-linked AI modules and semester-wise integration of practical AI learning.

One of the key proposals includes increasing practical exposure in AI education from the current 25–30 per cent to as high as 40–75 per cent depending on the specialization and degree structure. Students will also gain industry exposure through capstone projects, end-to-end AI engineering assignments and low-code or no-code AI tools.

The government also plans to integrate Responsible AI and AI governance throughout the curriculum instead of treating them as standalone subjects. Flexible academic pathways have also been proposed, allowing students to receive a Certificate after Year 1, Diploma after Year 2 and Advanced Diploma after Year 3.

Faculty development emerged as a major focus area during the discussions. Recommendations include nationwide Train-the-Trainer programmes, standardized assessments, curated course material and modernization of AI laboratories aligned with current industry tools and platforms. The proposal also encourages participation of industry professionals as adjunct faculty members to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world AI applications.

To improve equitable access to advanced computing resources, the taskforce proposed the creation of a national shared AI infrastructure model supported jointly by the government, academia and industry. The infrastructure would provide access to GPU computing, edge devices, software platforms and AI development tools for colleges and universities across the country.

The roadmap also includes engagement with All India Council for Technical Education for formal adoption of the revamped curriculum in upcoming academic batches. Additionally, a parallel AI literacy programme for non-STEM disciplines is being planned to improve AI awareness and applied usage across non-technical fields.

The initiative reflects India’s broader push to strengthen its AI ecosystem, enhance employability and align higher education with rapidly evolving global technology trends.
