News Story:
New Delhi, June 24, 2026: India and the United States have concluded a two-day ministerial-level trade meeting, reviewing progress on the proposed interim bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and discussing key issues including market access, digital trade, supply chain resilience, and non-tariff barriers.
The talks were led by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who visited New Delhi from June 22 to 24.
According to the Commerce Ministry, the discussions marked an important step toward advancing a balanced and mutually beneficial India-US trade agreement. Both sides reviewed substantial progress made by negotiating teams in recent months and explored pathways to conclude an interim deal before the expiration of the US’s temporary 10% tariff regime on July 24.
Focus on Market Access and Digital Trade
During the meetings, officials conducted a comprehensive review of the core elements of the proposed BTA, including:
- Enhanced market access
- Digital trade cooperation
- Supply chain resilience
- Reduction of non-tariff barriers
- Strategic sector collaboration
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to securing a commercially meaningful agreement that delivers benefits to businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers.
Race Against the July 24 Deadline
The negotiations have gained urgency as the temporary 10% tariff imposed by the US under Section 122 of the Trade Act is set to expire on July 24, 2026.
India and the US are seeking to finalize an interim framework before that date, ensuring greater clarity and preferential tariff treatment for Indian exports in the American market.
Trade Framework Under Recalibration
The proposed deal has undergone revisions following changes in US trade policy. Earlier this year, the two countries agreed on a framework that would reduce tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, offering India an advantage over several competing export-oriented economies.
However, subsequent legal and policy developments in the US prompted both sides to revisit certain commitments and recalibrate the framework.
Strategic Economic Partnership Expands
The latest talks came shortly after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, which provided fresh momentum to bilateral trade negotiations.
India has also indicated its intention to significantly increase purchases of US energy products, aircraft, technology equipment, precious metals, and coking coal over the coming years as part of efforts to deepen economic ties.
Trade Relationship Remains Strong
The United States remained India’s second-largest trading partner in FY2025-26. During the fiscal year, India’s exports to the US rose to USD 87.3 billion, while imports increased to USD 52.9 billion. India’s trade surplus with the US stood at USD 34.4 billion.
Both countries continue to target a broader and more comprehensive bilateral trade agreement that could further strengthen economic cooperation and boost two-way trade in the years ahead.
