Mumbai, August 19: SEBI-registered portfolio manager Optima has launched in India with an AI-native investment platform designed to build personalised portfolios around the financial risks investors already carry.
The Mumbai-headquartered firm is targeting investors whose wealth or income may be heavily concentrated in a particular business or industry. Its investment approach seeks to retain an investor’s core exposure while building a portfolio that can help manage associated risks.
Optima says many Indian investors accumulate wealth through a single industry or family business, potentially leaving both their investments and primary source of wealth exposed to similar economic cycles.
AI-Native Portfolio Management
Optima’s technology integrates systematic portfolio optimisation, trade execution and client services into a single AI-native system.
The company plans to roll out an upgraded version of the platform next month as it develops its proposition of bringing hedge-fund-style investment intelligence to individual clients.
The firm’s strategy takes inspiration from risk-management techniques commonly associated with hedge funds, where portfolios can be structured to maintain investment convictions while hedging specific risks.
Why Param Patel Founded Optima
Optima was founded by 26-year-old Param Patel after his experience trying to find a portfolio manager capable of designing investments around his family’s concentrated exposure to the real-estate sector.
Patel studied computer science and applied mathematics at the University of Southern California. He was also a Kleiner Perkins engineering fellow and worked with early-stage artificial intelligence companies in Silicon Valley and fintech businesses in New York.
After returning to India, Patel spent around 18 months developing and stress-testing quantitative investment systems using his family’s capital before building the Optima team.
Fully Bootstrapped Firm
Optima is fully bootstrapped and headquartered in Mumbai. Its team brings together expertise across quantitative research, product design and global hedge-fund trading.
The company is also offering a management-fee refund policy for new clients. According to Optima, clients who decide to leave within their first six months will receive a full refund of management fees.
With its combination of quantitative investing, artificial intelligence and personalised risk management, Optima is looking to differentiate itself in India’s growing portfolio management market.
