India’s electric vehicle market continued its strong growth momentum in May 2026, with retail sales witnessing significant gains across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and commercial vehicles, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Electric passenger vehicle retail sales surged 81.20% year-on-year to 26,682 units in May 2026, compared to 14,725 units sold during the same month last year. The sharp increase reflects growing consumer acceptance of electric mobility, expanding product offerings, and improving charging infrastructure across the country.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles maintained its leadership position in the electric passenger vehicle segment. The company sold 10,340 units during May, registering a strong growth of 103.42% over the 5,083 units sold in May 2025. The performance highlights Tata Motors’ continued dominance in India’s fast-growing EV market.

Mahindra & Mahindra secured the second position with retail sales of 6,210 electric vehicles, compared to 2,891 units in the corresponding period last year. The company recorded an impressive growth rate of 114.8%, supported by increasing demand for its expanding electric SUV portfolio.

JSW MG Motor India remained among the top performers, selling 4,984 electric passenger vehicles during May 2026, slightly higher than the 4,599 units recorded a year earlier.

The electric two-wheeler segment also posted robust growth, with total retail sales increasing 62.76% to 1,70,733 units from 1,04,896 units in May 2025. Rising fuel prices, improving battery technology, and increasing affordability continue to drive demand in the segment.

TVS Motor Company emerged as the leading electric two-wheeler manufacturer with retail sales of 42,459 units, marking a growth of 64.54% compared to 25,804 units sold during the same period last year.

Bajaj Auto followed closely with sales of 39,202 electric scooters, up significantly from 22,642 units a year ago. Ather Energy secured the third position with 28,240 units sold, nearly doubling its sales from 14,101 units in May 2025.

The electric three-wheeler category also maintained steady growth, with retail sales reaching 71,867 units compared to 66,185 units in the previous year. Meanwhile, electric commercial vehicle sales more than doubled to 2,400 units, highlighting growing adoption among fleet operators and logistics companies.

Industry experts believe that supportive government policies, expanding charging networks, lower operating costs, and increasing consumer awareness will continue to drive electric vehicle adoption across India. With manufacturers launching new models and investing heavily in EV technology, the country’s electric mobility ecosystem is expected to witness further expansion in the coming months.
