New Delhi, September 1, 2026: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded its highest-ever monthly transaction volume in August, reaching 24.51 billion transactions worth ₹29.82 trillion, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
UPI transaction volume increased 3.6% from July’s 23.66 billion transactions, marking the second consecutive month of record volumes. In July, UPI transactions were valued at ₹29.88 trillion.
On a year-on-year basis, UPI transaction volume increased 22% in August, while transaction value grew 20%, highlighting the continued expansion of digital payments across India.
The average number of daily UPI transactions increased to 791 million in August from 763 million in July. In value terms, average daily transactions stood at ₹96,205 crore, slightly below the ₹96,383 crore recorded in July.
The highest monthly UPI transaction value so far was recorded in May at ₹29.9 trillion, across 23.2 billion transactions.
Siddharth Mehta, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of fintech firm Kiwi, said the steady growth of UPI reflects a fundamental shift in the way consumers make and manage payments. He added that the next phase of UPI growth could increasingly focus on broader financial experiences beyond transaction volumes.
The latest figures come as UPI continues to strengthen its position as one of India’s leading digital payment platforms, supported by widespread adoption among consumers, merchants and businesses.
Meanwhile, other digital payment systems recorded mixed performance in August. Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) transactions declined by more than 1% month-on-month to 360 million, compared with 364 million in July. IMPS transaction value also declined 1% to ₹7.04 trillion.
However, IMPS transaction value increased 18% year-on-year despite a 25% decline in transaction volume compared with August 2025.
FASTag transactions recorded moderate growth during the month, increasing 1.2% to 351 million. The value of FASTag transactions rose to ₹7,185 crore from ₹7,143 crore in July.
The latest UPI numbers underline the continued momentum of India’s digital payments ecosystem, with transaction volumes reaching new records even as monthly transaction value remained broadly stable.
