August value reaches ₹29.8 lakh crore

New Delhi, September 1, 2026: Unified Payments Interface transactions remained near record levels in August, with the total value of payments reaching ₹29.82 lakh crore, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India.
The transaction value was close to the record level of ₹29.9 lakh crore recorded in May and July 2026.
In volume terms, UPI transactions reached a record 24.51 billion during August, compared with 23.66 billion in July.
The value of UPI transactions increased 20 per cent year-on-year from ₹24.85 lakh crore in August last year.
Transaction volumes grew 22 per cent annually from 19.63 billion transactions in the corresponding month last year.
Industry participants attributed part of the increase in August transaction volumes to festive activity, including Raksha Bandhan, which contributed to higher peer-to-peer transfers and small-value gifting transactions.
The sustained transaction volumes also reflect the expanding reach of India’s digital payments ecosystem.
UPI is now accepted in 11 countries, with Uzbekistan becoming the latest country to accept the Indian digital payment system.
Other countries where UPI is accepted include Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Greece.
Since its launch in August 2016, UPI has significantly transformed India’s digital payments landscape.
Transaction value increased from ₹0.07 lakh crore in FY17 to around ₹314 lakh crore in FY26, according to the data.
